# How to translate a recipe into English

Read a recipe saved in another language in English with one tap, or turn on Auto-translate. Amounts and your shopping list never change.

Recipes are saved in the language they were written in. When one is in a language you don't read, tap **Translate to English** under its title and read it in English. The recipe itself never changes.

## Translate a recipe

**1. Open the recipe**

On a recipe in another language, a line under the title offers **Translate to English**.

**2. Tap Translate to English**

It takes a few seconds. The recipe shows as written until the translation is ready.

**3. Switch back any time**

The recipe now reads in English, with a line like "Translated from Spanish · Show original". Tap **Show original** to see it as written, and **Show in English** to go back. Cook mode follows your choice.

## Translate every import automatically

Open **Settings** › **Units** and turn on **Auto-translate** under **Recipes**. From then on, every recipe you import in another language is translated into English right after the import. It's off by default.

## What changes and what doesn't

- **Translated:** the title, description, ingredient names, notes, section headings, steps, tips, equipment and option names.
- **Never changed:** amounts and units, servings, times, options, photos, nutrition and the creator credit. Your plan and shopping list stay exactly as they were.
- If a translation would drop a number or an ingredient, Phork It! shows the recipe as written instead of risking a wrong amount, with "Couldn't translate this recipe" and **Try again**.

## Editing a translated recipe

When you tap **Edit** on a translated recipe, Phork It! asks what you'd like to do:

- **Save a copy in English** makes your own English recipe and opens it for editing.
- **Edit the original** edits the recipe in its own language. The translation updates after a few seconds.

> **Tip:**

Sharing a recipe while it reads in English sends a link that opens in English too, with a **Show original** link.
